Minions

For our first week of Term 3 our lesson theme was the Minions.  This movie was one of the big movies of the school holidays and all the kids seemed to be talking about it.

Minions are really fun to draw and most age groups can achieve them.  We used coloured pencils yet you could easily do this lesson with oil pastels or with paint.  We had lots of fun drawing the minions and although a lot of children wanted to draw King Bob I did encourage them to have fun with their minions as we all know minions love to dress up....

Once the drawings were complete we also made some minions out of toilet paper rolls.

Here they are.....

Winter Holiday Workshop Wrap Up

Today was the last day of my 7 Art workshops for the winter holidays.  Thanks so much to those that attended I was chuffed that they were all full and the children that came to the studio were all so polite and lovely to get to know.

I was very fortunate with the weather and the sun shone down on us most workshops.  We ate morning or afternoon tea outside and the children released some energy in the garden at break.  Vital things to me in producing great art is 1. Not to be hungry and 2. Have regular breaks.

We talked about some inspiring artists during the workshops, Laurel Burch and George Rodrigue. Both their styles evokes a sense of happiness, colour and enthusiasm.

I tried to capture photos yet as usual missed a few yet here is a bit of a summary of some of the great art produced over the past two weeks.

Remember its not always about the end product or the piece the child produces in the class, its all about enjoying the process of producing art.  I hope the children leave my classes believing they can be an artist and they can create lovely works of art.  In art there are no right ways and wrong ways, they need to find their own style and practice.  I hope some of them continue to create when they get home.

Charcoal and Chalk Pastel Animals

We have just done a lesson concentrating on using charcoal and chalk pastels.

I just love using these, they are truly messy as all good art should be.  I try to remind the children to "paint with their fingers" when using these mediums so they can smudge the medium into and around the paper.  This really reminds me of finger painting.

I gave three examples for the children to use as inspiration, a penguin, owl's eyes and a koala.  The idea was to draw the subject in charcoal and then to add only a little colour (limited to one or two colours) for interest.  Some children followed these rules and some didn't (it's a bit hard tell them off for breaking the rules since I'm always telling them there are no rules in art....ahem).

Here is what they produced!  Some children really excelled in this lesson.  Well done!  Yes, there are a lot of photo's - my speedy workers can produce over 3 pictures in just one lesson..
